Geopolitical tensions are reshaping Europe's liberal political and economic order. Russia's continuing invasion of Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic, and not least Brexit have exposed the vulnerabilities of economic interdependencies and prompted policymakers to strengthen the EU's foreign economic and security policies. At the same time, the European Green Deal and the digital transition are transforming the governance of the EU's single market and altering the way the EU interacts with other major economies. This geopolitical restructuring of the EU is recent, and foreign and security policies are a work in progress. In this policy field, our experts explore the challenges and constraints arising from the changing world order, evaluate how the EU is addressing them, analyse what this means for the European polity, and develop forward-looking recommendations for its international role in a world increasingly driven by geopolitics.
