The Jacques Delors Centre Deputy Director comments on the European Commission’s intention to extend the flexible state aid regime, saying "there is no reason why this arrangement should last beyond the current economic cycle".
In October, the EU executive began consultations with the 27 member states to extend the flexible state aid regime granted in April to counter the ongoing crisis and to increase support for the companies hardest hit by inflation.
"There is no political will on the part of the Commission for such a regime to last over time, the current relaxation only responds to the macroeconomic climate,” Redeker explains. “The only exception is for the industrial policy of important projects of common European interest (IPCEI) such as semiconductors, where there is a real will to encourage public aid in order to develop these strategic sectors.”
