Lucas Guttenberg argues in Der Spiegel for "genuine common expenditure" instead of loans for EU countries particularly affected by the corona pandemic.
With regards to the summit of EU heads of government last Thursday, our deputy director calls for genuine relief for the southern member states. To support those countries which have been hit hardest by the crisis, more than loans are needed. For countries like Italy, which are already heavily in debt, loans could lead to high risk premiums on the financial markets. "Instead, it should now be a matter of genuine joint EU spending," Guttenberg is quoted in Der Spiegel.
