Underlying all of the European Union’s policymaking processes are its legal and institutional foundations. This concerns the potential and limits of the legal framework under which the EU operates, as well as both the horizontal institutional balance between the various EU institutions and the vertical interaction between the EU and its Member states. On the legal side, our experts write on the interplay between European institutions and EU law’s impact on national constitutional orders. On the political side, our experts put forward innovative proposals for institutional reforms and stronger democratic procedures. They also analyse the development and implications of broader political trends such as challenges to the rule of law, differentiated integration, enlargement, politicization and Eurosceptic populism. As in other areas, an inter-disciplinary approach to the EU's institutional development characterises our policy and research work.
