Rule of Law - What is happening in Brussels and beyond?

A presentation by Thu Nguyen (Jacques Delors Centre). This event is part of the European Governance Colloquium.

Abstract

The question of how to uphold the rule of law in the EU is an omnipresent issue. In recent times, on 30 September, the European Commission published its first ever Rule of Law Reports on all 27 EU member states, finding several states to be deficient on the rule of law. A week later, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg handed down its judgment on the Hungarian law on foreign universities, also known as lex CEU, deeming it in breach of EU law. At the same time, disagreements between the Council and the European Parliament on rule of law conditionality threatened to derail the negotiations on the EU’s multiannual framework (MFF) and the Corona recovery fund in Brussels. In this Colloquium, Thu Nguyen will give a brief update on what is happening with regard to the rule of law in Brussels and beyond, with a particular focus on the negotiations on rule of law conditionality in Brussels.
