Citizenship and residence by investment is a fast-growing global phenomenon. As of 2022, more than a third of all countries in the world offered paths to membership in exchange for a donation or investment into their economies. Yet we know little about how these programmes operate and debates in academia and the wider public are often misinformed by sensationalist cases. Dimitry Vladimirovich Kochenov's book "Citizenship and Residence Sales: Rethinking the Boundaries of Belonging" offers a multidisciplinary exploration of both citizenship and residence by investment on a global scale. Bringing together the expertise of leading legal scholars, economists, sociologists, political scientists, and historians, it provides an informative and empirically grounded assessment of the origins, operation, key causes, and the legal bases of the investment migration programmes. By so doing, the volume demystifies citizenship and residence by investment and takes a critical postcolonial global perspective, addressing key issues in belonging, exclusion, and inequality that define the world today.

Prof. Dimitry Vladimirovich Kochenov currently leads the Rule of Law Workgroup at the Central European University Democracy Institute and teaches at the Department of Legal Studies. In 2023 he has been awarded a EUR 1M grant from Stiftung Mercator to establish Clinical Rule of Law work in Budapest, which is his main on-going project. Prof. Kochenov's research focuses on the principles of law in the global context, with a special emphasis on the Rule of Law, citizenship, and the enforcement of EU values. He is a Visiting Professor at LUISS Guido Carli in Rome (Faculty of Law) and Malyi Fellow of the University of Chicago Law School. In the last semester he was also Mercator Fellow at Forshungskolleg Humanwissenschaften in Bad Homburg. He has published numerous monographs, papers, and edited collections, and sits on the editorial boards, inter alia, of the Hague Journal on the Rule of Law, Review of Democracy, Oxford Encyclopaedia of European Law, and Review of Central and East European Law.

Dr. Grażyna Baranowska is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Hertie School's Centre for Fundamental Rights and an Assistant Professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences. She is the Principal Investigator of MIRO, a project seeks to identify and interpret international legal obligations regarding ‘missing migrants’ and accordingly critique and shape the practices of the EU, its Member States, and pertinent international organisations. Since August 2022, she is a member of the UN Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances.
