How to survive a trade war: A case for EU burden-sharing

The economic fallout from Trump’s sweeping tariffs will hit some member states and sectors harder than others. Without a mechanism to share the costs, national responses risk distorting the Single Market and weakening the EU’s unity. This op ed makes the case for a European burden-sharing approach to ensure political cohesion and economic resilience in the face of escalating trade tensions.

This OpEd was co-authored by Arthur Leichthammer, Policy Fellow at the Jacques Delors Centre, Aslak Berg, Research Fellow at the Centre for European Reform, and Etienne Höra, Project Manager at Bertelsmann Stiftung, and was first published on 5 May 2025 in the Europe.Table Briefing by Table.Media.
