Podcast EU to go - Ukraine - A turning point in EU security policy

Ronja Kempin from the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik and Nicole Koenig from the Jacques Delors Centre discuss whether the Strategic Compass heralds a new era in EU security policy.

The war in Ukraine has been a security policy wake-up call for Europeans. The EU adopted the Strategic Compass for Security and Defence just one month after the start of the Russian offensive. Although the document has been in the works since 2020, signficant refinement has been undertaken in recent weeks and months. Ronja Kempin from the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik and Nicole Koenig from the Jacques Delors Centre discuss whether the Strategic Compass represents a quantum leap in EU security policy, how the war in Ukraine has changed the document and what is still missing. The two agree that the EU has overcome its normal restraints in the case of Ukraine. But it remains to be seen whether a turning point will emerge.
