Retrospective Summary: Strategic Autonomy and the Geopolitics of EU Law Conference (14-15 November 2024)

The Jacques Delors Centre and HEC Paris held the conference Strategic Autonomy and the Geopolitics of EU Law on 14-15 November 2024 in Berlin. Co-funded by the European Union, the conference brought together legal scholars, policymakers, and international relations experts to explore the intersection of geopolitics and European Union law and to discuss the evolving geopolitical challenges reshaping the EU’s legal and political landscape.

The two-day conference featured a diverse range of sessions, transitioning from theoretical explorations of law and geopolitics to in-depth discussions on EU policy adaptations in areas such as industrial policy, digital governance, and defense. Day one centred on “Geopolitics – Conceptual and Comparative Perspectives," while day revolved aorund “Strategic Autonomy Unpacked: The Geopolitical Turn in EU Policies.” The event concluded with a compelling session on the EU’s “DNA,” highlighting the resilience and adaptability of its legal framework in addressing contemporary geopolitical challenges.
