A greater international role for the euro is a key strategic element in safeguarding European economic sovereignty. However, achieving and then maintaining that role will be no easy feat. In this paper, Kris Best identifies the major roadblocks in the debate and discusses the challenges that a stronger international role for the euro would pose for the euro area.
