Policy Fellow Thu Nguyen speaks with Die Welt on the new rule of law mechanism and her predictions for how the Commission will choose to first employ it, suggesting that Hungary will be the first case.
Although the new rule of law mechanism provides the Commission with new powers, Thu Nguyen notes that they must be careful in their first employment of the mechanism "the Commission should think carefully about when exactly and, above all, against whom it now uses the rule of law mechanism." She goes on to say that the Commission "will want to be 200 percent sure that it wins the first case," and should therefore focus first on Hungary.
