“The world for which Europe was built no longer exists” – ZEIT interview with the JDC Acting Co-Directors

In an interview with DIE ZEIT, Jacques Delors Centre Acting Co-Directors Thu Nguyen and Nils Redeker discuss how the EU must adapt to a changing global order.

In an interview with DIE ZEIT, Thu Nguyen and Nils Redeker, Acting Co-Directors of the Jacques Delors Centre, reflect on Europe’s place in a rapidly changing world. They argue that the European Union must adapt to a geopolitical landscape defined by US-China competition and new security threats.

Nguyen highlights the EU’s limited influence in foreign policy and the need for greater unity, while Redeker likens Europe’s current state to “sleep paralysis”, aware of the challenges but not yet able to act decisively. Both see today’s crises as an opportunity to deepen integration, strengthen the single market and invest jointly in strategic technologies.
