The impact of data-driven political campaigning

Andrea Römmele is Germany country expert in ERC grant-funded research project.

Hertie School Dean of Executive Education and Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society Andrea Römmele will team up with other experts for a new research project focussing on the impact of digital campaigning in five different countries: the US, UK, France, Germany and Poland. Römmele is providing expertise on Germany to the research group.

Under the leadership of Rachel Gibson, Political Science Professor at the University of Manchester, the project titled “Digital Campaigning and Electoral Democracy” examines the use of digital technologies during political campaigns, which in the past have often led to a reshaping of the electoral landscape.

Against the backdrop of upcoming elections in five major democracies between 2020 and 2023, the results of the research will provide answers to urgent questions about these new political practices and their consequences for both voters and parties by using cutting-edge methods and data.

The project received a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant, which lends financial support to leading experts from across the EU.

Römmele and Gibson have worked together previously on other research projects. The results of their ongoing collaboration will be discussed in a forthcoming article in the journal New Media and Society.
