Nils Redeker speaks on Tagesthemen about the need to make Europe's automotive industry competitive in light of the EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
Speaking on the ARD Tagesthemen, Nils Redeker addressed the EU’s planned tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles: “The big question will be whether the time that has been bought here is now being used to develop a strategy to truly establish a competitive European automotive industry of the future.”
The European Commission decided to impose protective tariffs of up to 35.3% on Chinese electric vehicles to counter the massive subsidisation of China's automotive industry, which has resulted in Chinese electric cars being offered at significantly lower prices in Europe compared to European models. These tariffs aim to correct this market distortion.
Over the past four years, the market share of Chinese electric cars in the EU has risen from 1.9% to 14.1%. Europe must now set the course to remain competitive. The key question is whether European manufacturers can offer better and more competitive models in the medium term.
