In an interview with WELT, our Policy Fellow explains that there is still no agreement on the distribution of migrants within the EU.
After the liberal FDP and the Greens called on the Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser (Social Democrats), to work for a better distribution of migrants within the EU, Faeser discussed the issue with other member states on 24 March.
"There is still no agreement on the questions of how asylum procedures should be run at the border and how migrants should be distributed within the EU," says Lucas Rasche.
The reception of the many Ukrainian refugees has increased "the tendency in many countries to focus even more on sealing off asylum seekers from other regions", Rasche adds.
According to the Federal Minister of the Interior, the window of opportunity for a comprehensive reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) will close in the summer. The EU member states would have to reach an agreement by then so that there would be time for negotiations with the Parliament before the EU parliamentary elections.
