In L'Opinion, Yann Wernert, Franco-German expert at the Jacques Delors Centre, shares his views on possible German answers to the French president’s Sorbonne speech on the European Union.
The French president hoped to finally get their neighbors' clear support for its vision of the EU. However, Yann Wernert recalls that it is unlikely that Olaf Scholz will respond directly to Macron’s 2017 speech. He adds " He would not want the idea to take hold that Germany is giving Europe its direction." Germany has over the years responded pragmatically to many French proposals and implemented them quietly. Some crucial questions are however still open, for example the German government’s stance on European financial policy.
