The disinterest of many Germans in the presidential campaign can be explained in several ways. The Russian attack on Ukraine is attracting a lot of media attention, and until recently, many Germans had firmly assumed that President Macron would be re-elected, as Yann Wernert notes. Nevertheless, the political situation in France and polls suggest that the race could be much closer than in 2017.
