The ever new scandals around Frontex have institutional and political reasons, explains Lucas Rasche to dpa.
On the one hand, while the competences, budget and staff of Frontex have steadily grown, the democratic control over the agency is still deficient, our migration expert said. On the other hand, he added, the events had to be seen in the context of the EU’s wider migration policy: Instead of adequate solutions, the EU has been relying on deterrence for too long. "Frontex's involvement in pushbacks is a continuation of that policy," Rasche said.
