“Negotiate until it hurts”, instead of fundamental opposition to Ursula von der Leyen in revenge for the ignored ‘Spitzenkandidat’ principle. This is what Lucas Guttenberg demands from the European Parliament in a contribution for Zeit Online ahead of the vote on the office of President of the Commission. If the MEPs let von der Leyen fail as President of the Commission, nobody profits. If, however, von der Leyen is pressured to promise more rights for the Parliament as a concession for her election, Europe as a whole will benefit.
