Deutschlandfunk - EU defence policy and the war in Ukraine

In an interview with Deutschlandfunk, Deputy Director Nicole Koenig discusses how EU defense policy has changed as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The war has had a major impact on the defence strategy of both the EU and NATO, and it particularly "underlines...for the first time NATO's role as a nuclear alliance," according to Nicole Koenig. In addition, the war has pushed Europe to continue to improve European sovereignty, both through improved defence capacities and more cooperation within the EU framework. However, these changes in the character of European defense policy do not mean that the EU is no longer a force for peace. According to Nicole Koenig, "the EU remains a peace power, but the war in Ukraine shows that the EU needs to work much harder for this peace."
