The EU currently stands at a crossroads in the rule of law crisis occuring in Poland. In a audio interview with ARD, Policy Fellow Thu Nguyen explains the core of the problem and the next steps for the EU.
Although many believe that the current issue between the EU and Poland is based on "different ideas about the future or the nature of the EU," Thu Nguyen argues that the conflict is instead based on "whether a country can be a member of the EU and at the same time abolish the independence of the courts at home." She goes on to say that although the EU can "exercise political [and financial] pressure" against Poland "a change of direction in the Polish government on this conflict is in the hands of Polish voters at home."
