Katharina Barley worked as a lawyer in the advisory service to the Rhineland-Palatinate Parliament; seconded to the Federal Constitutional Court to work as a research assistant; seconded to the House of the Greater Region in Luxembourg as a German representative; commissioned judge at Trier regional court and Wittlich local court; senior officer at the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection. She was a member of the German Bundestag from 2013 to 2019, Secretary-General of the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 2015 to 2017, Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth from 2017 to 2018, acting Head of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs from 2017 to 2018 and Federal Minister for Justice and Consumer Protection from 2018 to 2019. Since 2019 she is Vice President of the European Parliament.
